In this loop
Thresh is already point-blank when his Q winds up; R goes out on the cast, not the travel
The hook has almost no distance to cover; the clone barely gets placed before the chain arrives
Hook and flay both land on the clone instead of the real body, a different result than a dodge, still not the one Thresh wanted

Same read as the clean dodge. Just too close this time to make it there instead of just be there.
The Clone Dodge works when there’s a beat of travel time to spend the cast in: R goes up before the hit lands, and neither body takes anything at all. Point-blank range doesn’t leave that beat. Thresh is already close enough that the hook’s wind-up and its travel are nearly the same instant, so the read is the right one and the execution is still late by the only margin that matters here. The clone appears just in time to be the thing standing there when the chain connects, not in time to have moved anywhere first. Hook and flay both land on it instead of the real target, which is a worse outcome than a clean dodge and a much better one than eating both on the actual body. The same two-minute cooldown, spent on the same read, doesn’t always buy the same result. Sometimes it just buys who gets hit.
